Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow.

Ultherapy Examples

Ultherapy uses ultrasound (sound waves) to stimulate collagen buried deep within the skin without disturbing the skin surface. The benefit is lifting, toning, and tightening the skin of the brow, chin and neck making you look younger without surgery, scars, or anesthesia.

There is no downtime and normal activities can be resumed immediately. The ultrasound focuses on the same areas addressed during a facelift harnessing the natural healing and reparative processes of the body.

What is Ultherapy?

Actual Patient post Chemical Peel Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a non-invasive procedure utilizing micro-focused ultrasound to heat tissue under the skin surface. This stimulates the healing process to lift and tighten the skin surrounding the neck, chin and brow. It is approved by the FDA with no downtime and minimal side effects.

What makes Ultherapy unlike other cosmetic procedures?

Ultherapy works on tissue below the skin surface while all other noninvasive treatments work on the surface in a top down way. It completely spares the outer skin. The controlled injury precisely denatures collagen at specific depths stimulating healing. As new collagen grows over time, the effects of the procedure become apparent; usually between three to six months. The entire procedure takes about an hour and there is no need to limit your activities.

Ultherapy is the only noninvasive procedure to also use ultrasound for imaging. This allows us to see each layer of tissue we are targeting to ensure all of the energy is being placed with pin-point accuracy. This maximizes the effect of the treatment.

Is there any pain associated with the treatment?

With recent advancements in technology, Ultherapy has become a very comfortable procedure. A new software upgrade called “Ultherapy Amplify” significantly diminishes discomfort and actually improves results. Most patients report that the procedure is very tolerable. Pain thresholds vary from person to person and any temporary sensations will be different for each individual.

We strive to make the treatment experience as comfortable as possible. At de Ramon Plastic Surgery, we have found that the vast majority of patients only require pretreatment with ibuprofen. While the procedure can produce some discomfort at times, most patients report little to no discomfort. “Getting my eye brows waxed hurts more than Ultherapy” said a recent patient.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment times vary with the number of areas to be treated. Treating the brow and upper face alone takes about a half hour. Treating the lower face takes about an hour and treating the whole face takes about an hour and a half.

How long does it take to see the results and how do they last?

It can take 3 to 6 months to see the results depending on several factors (patient age, amount of photo-aging, nutrition, skin care regimen, exposure to smoke, degree of skin laxity, etc). Studies indicate that the results last 1 ½ to 3 years and that 80 - 90% of patients have a noticeable improvement. The final results of Ultherapy vary from individual to individual. Since the aging process continues, some patients come back for repeat Ultherapy every year or two to maintain or even improve their results.

Are there any side effects of Ultherapy?

On occasion, patients see a slight redness for up to an hour immediately after treatment. A small percentage may also have minor swelling, tingling, or sunburn sensation. Mild tenderness and slight bruising can be seen. These are temporary and will fade quickly. Makeup may be worn immediately. Normal activities can be resumed immediately.

How safe is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is very safe. There have been no major complications reported. There have been over 100,000 treatments performed safely worldwide. After a demonstration of safety in clinical studies, the FDA has cleared the procedure. The use of ultrasound energy has been used the medical field for over 50 years and has a proven record of safety.

Does it require more than one treatment?

It depends on how the body responds to the collagen-building process. Most patients only need one treatment but others may benefit from additional treatments. Everyone has a different amount of laxity to their skin and a different response to Ultherapy.

What makes a good candidate?

A person with mild to moderate degree of skin laxity makes a good candidate for Ultherapy. One of the first signs of aging skin is oftentimes a lowered eyebrow or sagging skin on the eyelids. A person with loose skin under the chin or upper neck may also make an excellent candidate.

Younger people attempting to “stay ahead of the game” or patients who have already had a facelift but are trying to maintain their results will benefit from Ultherapy.

Ultherapy does not replace surgical face lift procedures, but it does produce a noticeable result/improvement while avoiding the need of anesthesia, a trip to the OR, the need for an invasive procedure, the need for several weeks of recovery and the cost of a facelift. In weighing all the factors involved in facial rejuvenation options, many people find Ultherapy to be a great value.

Can you perform Ultherapy on other parts of the body?

Unfortunately you cannot. Ultherapy is only used on the face and neck to lift the skin of the neck, chin and brow. There are other treatment options available for other areas of the body. However, there are ongoing studies evaluating the efficacy of Ultherapy on other body areas and for other indications.

How does Ultherapy affect collagen? What does collagen do for my skin?

Ultherapy generates a thermal affect under the skin that jumpstarts the growth of new, fresh collagen. It also strengthens and repairs existing collagen.

Collagen is a naturally produced protein that makes skin appear youthful and supports the skin. The aging process tends to loosen collagen, which in turn, loses its strength and the ability to withstand the pull of gravity resulting in aging and sagging skin.

Does Ultherapy work for men?

Yes, the procedure is gender neutral. Men and women worldwide receive Ultherapy treatment.
